I know that subtitling programmes is a thankless job. That subtitlers are, on the whole, dedicated and conscientious people, providing a valuable service. And that we all make mistakes.

...I still can't decide whether the original gag or the oopsie in the subtitling was funnier here. ;)

Episode 5 of The Thick of It, on BBC iPlayer. Opposition MP Peter Mannion [pictured], mid-radio-interview, apparently has the following to say about a certain Governmental expletive-spewing Scottish spin doctor...

...cue mental

sound on the part of every single viewer.

'The 'Gorbals Goebbels', you daft thing. SEE ICON.

Granted, subber in question might not be especially familiar with the series, but surely even a cursory five minutes' seconds' worth of viewing should establish beyond all reasonable doubt that there is no reason, in the name of all things fluffy on God's green Earth, why anyone would ever dare refer to Malcolm Tucker as a gerbil.

This is a gerbil. Small, cute, furry.

And this is Malcolm. Gaunt, "the all-swearing eye", psychopathic.

I rest my case.

There is not the least need to hide, for you are in good - and surprisingly plentiful - company there. ;)

The fact that the brilliant Peter Capaldi plays both Malcolm "Come-the-fuck-in-or-fuck-the-fuck-off" Tucker, and the quiet, reserved and dutiful John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth, led to much amused speculation on CoE daily blogs about the likely consequences if it had been Malcolm facing down the 456. General consensus is that the aliens wouldn't have lasted three minutes...

Don't know if The Thick of It is shown on BBC America, but I'd recommend checking out the spin-off film In the Loop if you ever get a chance. XD

P.P.S. You're in very plentiful company. Capaldi has officially topped the Guardian's Chart of Lust '09. XD

*chortles* I see your point, even though I don't know this Malcolm. I have at least heard of Goebles, even if I might not spell it right.

Actually, though... that gerbil you got the pic of does resemble this Malcolm a bit around the eyes and nose, though the gerbil does look a little kinder.

He is more than a little rodenty, now you mention it... But, yeah: Goebbels =/= Gerbil; get you some history lessons, subtitler!

As I said to Bones, not sure if The Thick of It is available in the US, but, In the Loop is well worth a watch - ooh, and I just found a clip from the episode above. Two opposing parties' MPs are each digging themselves deeper in a live radio debate, when both sides' spin doctors arrive to try and mop up the mess of their respective bosses, leading to a bit of a pissing contest behind the scenes over what dirt they can dig up on the others' politicians.

That was actually pretty amazing, and now I can see why bone_lady says he's cute... in a kind of psychotic way! "Fucking break every thumb and forefinger of every fucking wanker who I think even resembles..." Hee! :D
